CARA JUAN

theatre maker/musician/writer

Cara Juan (they/she) is a multi disciplinary artist based out of Chicago. Cara studied theater and vocal performance at Lawrence University and performance and interactive media arts at Brooklyn College. At around the age of 11, Cara was diagnosed with scoliosis, but due to a genetic predisposition, was not able to receive surgery to correct it. This spinal abnormality has greatly influenced Cara's relationship with her own body as well as physical bodies in general and what we consider beautiful, normal, grotesque and mundane. They explore these topics in their work spanning written word, visual art, music and theater.

For the last two summers, Cara has had the pleasure of working at the Santa Fe Playhouse where they appeared in numerous readings and main stage musicals. For the last ten years, they have also been performing as one fourth of the Austin based indie band Ladyfang (lead vocals/song writer/synth). Ladyfang played as an official SXSW artist in 2022 and has played hundreds of shows across the US, sharing bills with Roses, Magna Carda and Jack Harlow. Currently, Cara is working on her first collection of poetry and on a solo music project, Freddie the Butcher.

When not making things, Cara works as a certified secondary math and special education teacher.
